08 Sep 2014  | New initiative to prevent domestic violence against women and their children
Minister for Community Services has today attended the launch of Our Watch, a new national initiative aimed to prevent violence against women and their children.

“Violence does not discriminate. It cuts across the boundaries of age, race, culture, wealth and geography,” Mrs Price said.

“Our Watch has a mandate to stop this violence before it occurs and is calling on all Australians to speak out and take action to prevent violence against women and their children.”

Our watch was launched today by Natasa Stott Despoja who announced a high profile line-up of Our Watch supporters, including inaugural Patron-in-Chief, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, Governor-General of Australia, and Patron, Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO.

“According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, one in three Australian women has experienced physical violence since the age of 15,” Mrs Price said.

“Almost one in five has experienced sexual violence and Northern Territory crime statistics show that in 2012-13, over 54 per cent of all offences against the person were recorded as domestic violence related."
